Find shelter and a safe place to collect yourself

The first thing you should do after a disaster destroys your home is to find shelter and a safe place to collect yourself because a situation like that will be traumatizing. Additionally, you should find out how to file a home insurance claim as soon as possible because your insurer can help pay for a better place to lay your head. Not having to worry about where you are going to live temporarily makes this process ten times less stressful.

Here is a complete list of steps you should follow if your home is destroyed by a disaster:

  • Call your insurance company to file a claim.
  • Apply for government aid.
  • Contact your mortgage servicer to inform them of what happened.
  • Request help from friends and family for clothes, food, and other necessities until you are on your feet again.
  • Though it is hard, be thankful you are still standing.

Courses of Action:

  1. Safety First – Check if everyone is okay and safe.
  2. Salvage Resources – Salvage those precious resources that can be utilized since relief efforts might not come anytime soon.
  3. Help others – Others are just as vulnerable as you, and problems shared are problems halved.
  4. Communicate to the outside world – Do your best to communicate. Friends and family are just as anxious and waiting for updates on ground zero, and communications might be cut off by the disaster.
  5. This too shall pass – Be resilient. It will eventually be over.

Prepare a disaster plan

It’s unfortunate that we live in a world where we have to worry about these events, but [my family and I] are going to be prepared. We’ve already created our plan based on the geographic area that we live in and the things that we feel will affect us the most.

We have a second place [we can go to] across the country in case we need to evacuate. If we can stay close by, but not in our house, then we have a set up in the forest with enough supplies to last us a long time.
